On the Air!
Amateur radio, sometimes referred to as Ham radio, is a long-time resource and hobby and is far from being a thing of the past. In addition to being a fun and challenging hobby, it has proven many times to be a valuable method of communication in times of disaster or emergency.
In recent events such as the Hurricanes in the gulf, Puerto Rico and the Carolinas to the Hawaii volcano and other disasters, amateur radio was a valuable resource for the affected communities. When other communication systems such as cell phones, police/fire radios and commercial radio had failed, Ham Radio was still being used extensively.
The interest in amateur radio is growing and the need for people to be involved in community communication will always be there. It is in the spirit of those who have contributed in the past that we continue in our quest to experiment and succeed in our communication efforts.
There are programs for young and old to become involved. Visit the ARRL website @ www.arrl.org for more information.
